Breaking: Long Delays at NYC Area Airports Tonight, Says FAA

airplanes at an airport

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) just released the following on their social media:

Due to the availability of staff tonight, the FAA must reduce the flow of aircraft in certain airspace serving New York City to maintain safety. Departure and arrival delays this evening could approach two hours at John F. Kennedy International Airport – JFK, LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport – EWR airports. Passengers should prepare for delays, and monitor https://www.fly.faa.gov for updates. Please check with your airline for information about specific flights.

According to www.fly.faa.gov, as of this writing, EWR is already showing an average 44 minute ground delay from 5pm to 10:59pm, and LGA is at a ground stop from 4:43pm to 6:15pm (due to “Other”).

After all the back and forth about why commercial airlines have had so many delays – weather, lack of pilots, lack of grounds crew, lack of flight attendants, timing out, etc. – I guess lack of air traffic control staff really IS an issue sometimes.

Anyone flying in or out of EWR, JFK or LGA tonight, good luck!
