Why The TWA Hotel Is Advertising Another Hotel, Not Themselves

Joe and I adore the TWA Hotel. Between its history and its kitsch, it’s very “us.” Here are some of the things we wrote about the TWA Hotel after our first stay, in 2019:

If you get an email from a hotel, you expect them to invite you to stay with them. Perhaps they’re trying to get “butts in beds.” Maybe they’re offering a great deal.

But the TWA hotel recently sent out a very different type of email. Joe got one. Instead of asking people to come stay with them, they were suggesting potential guests fly to California and stay at the Pasadena Hotel and Pool.

Why is the TWA Hotel advertising for the Pasadena Hotel & Pool? Not surprisingly, they’re both owned by the same company.

MCR currently owns 145 hotels in 37 states. Some are typical franchise-style hotels with familiar brand names. Hilton Garden Inn Orlando at Seaworld. Sheraton New York Times Square. Residence Inn by Marriott Austin Airport. Homewood Suites by Hilton Cathedral City Palm Springs.

But MCR also has some one-off hotels in their collection, such as the Chambers Hotel in Minneapolis, the High Line Hotel and the New Yorker, both in NYC, the TWA Hotel at JFK and yep, the Pasadena Hotel and Pool, in Pasadena.

The Pasadena Hotel was originally built in 1926. It was owned by Constance V. Perry, a prominent local businesswoman, and at the time it was opened, it was called the Hotel Constance. In its heyday, the Hotel Constance was reportedly one of the most prominent hotels in Pasadena.

The Hotel Constance eventually closed and spent many decades as an assisted living facility. That closed in 2007.

The space was restored by a Hong Hong real estate investment company and reopened, once again as a hotel, now the Dusit D2 Hotel Constance, in 2014. Further construction, in the form of a huge addition, was completed in 2019, which is also when the hotel was again renamed, this time to its original moniker, the Hotel Constance.

Hotel Constance was a victim of Covid, and closed in March, 2020. It looks as if it reopened for themed pool parties in the summer of 2021, but then the hotel went into bankruptcy.

MCR acquired the hotel in March 2022, and reopened the space, now renamed the Pasadena Hotel & Pool, in November, 2022.

And now, I guess, they want more guests 😉 So who better to advertise a nearly 100-year-old hotel with a lobby that still has a 100-year-old “feel,” than to guests of another of their “old but with a lobby refurbished to look like its original time period” hotels?

Smart advertising, there! I mean, early January is a very slow season for visitors to the NYC area – it’s cold, it could be snowy, etc. But Pasadena is beautiful in January, with an average high of 68 degrees. So why not advertise a “new” (old) hotel to the guests of an established one?
