In what could be described as the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing, I received an email from Starbucks offering me “Double Stars” for purchases.
While I’m willing to sign up for these double-star promotions, they don’t get me to take an extra Starbs run during the day. I’ll gladly take 2x stars for purchases I’m going to make anyway.
What makes this offer tone-deaf is that it comes only days after Starbucks announced a major devaluation to the Starbucks Rewards program. In fact, starting on February 13, some rewards will cost up to 100% more than they did before. This means that while I can earn double points on 1/10 when redeeming my stars after the devaluation, I’ll get the same value as before points lost 50% of their value.
Not all rewards will cost 2x as much, and some redemptions have moved to lower categories, so you need to find where your best value for stars is with the new valuations.
It’s sending a double-point promotion right after devaluing some rewards by 100%, which is a case of poor timing.
