There are several ways people get flight vouchers. When your flight was significantly delayed. Or canceled. You were bumped. However, I just read about another way a few lucky people will be getting a handful of flight vouchers…all they need to do is adopt a kitten.
Nevada’s largest animal shelter is called The Animal Foundation of Las Vegas. Or just The Animal Foundation for short. A nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization and founded in 1978, it started as a low-cost spay and neuter clinic. Through the years it’s grown and is now one of the highest volume single-site animal shelters in the United States. Their mission is to save all healthy and treatable animals in the Las Vegas Valley.
On December 23rd, three infant kittens and their mother arrived at The Animal Foundation. The shelter’s staff usually name their newest charges via themes. Cheese. TV shows, etc. When the kittens showed up during such a crazy time for travel, the staff decided to name them after airlines. Not all names would be appropriate (I totally get that. I mean, can you imagine naming a kitten “United” or “British Airways?”), so they finally decided:
- The tortoiseshell one would be named “Frontier”
- The orange one would be known as “Delta”
- The orange and white kitten’s name would be “Southwest” (for obvious reasons, that third one was renamed a day or two later LOL).
The kittens were “announced” on The Animal Fountation’s Twitter feed a few days later:
Meet the newest additions to our kitten nursery! Spirit’s name used to be Southwest, but due to recent events, our marketing team requested we change it. #SouthwestAirlines pic.twitter.com/UddeeWm1wN

A local news station, Fox 5 KVVU-TV, reported about the kittens and that got the attention of Frontier Airlines. They, in turn, announced they would give free flight vouchers to anyone who adopted the three kittens.
This is so sweet! Thank you for the honor, @animalfndlv! We'd love to donate two flight vouchers each to the people who adopt @Delta and @Spirit; and four vouchers to the person who adopts Frontier. 💚🐱 @FOX5Vegas pic.twitter.com/kbmud6RcZt

Whoever adopted Spirit or Delta would receive two $250 Frontier vouchers, while the new parents to Frontier, the cat, would get four $250 vouchers.
The kittens and their mother (her name is Momma) will remain with their foster until they’re old enough (at least 6 weeks) and heavy enough (at least a pound and a half) to go to their respective forever homes.
Kelsey Pizzi, communications manager at the Animal Foundation says the shelter has been inundated with interest from potential adopters from across the country. Ever since the kittens were online, the shelter has reportedly received dozens of emails about them every day. So far they haven’t decided who will be allowed to adopt them.
Tyri Squyres, Frontier’s VP of marketing, is suggesting the kitten named Frontier might gain some special privileges.
“I don’t think the kitty will end up on the tail,” she said, referring to the airline’s program that spotlights more than three dozen endangered animals on its aircraft. “But I think we should do something special.”
If you’re potentially interested in adopting Delta, Spirit and/or Frontier, heads up that the shelter only adopts pets to people who complete the adoption process in person. However, the potential new families don’t necessarily need to live in Las Vegas.
