Marriott Bonvoy is an ever-growing conglomerate of diverse hotel brands around the globe. There are currently 30 brands under the Marriott umbrella, from ultra-luxury resorts to roadside hotels.
We’ve stayed everywhere, from Luxury Collection hotels (Our favorite Marriott hotel brand) to many stays at Sheraton, Courtyard, Fairfield, AC Hotels, Moxy, Residence Inn and, recently, an Element hotel.
Marriott is now close to adding a 31st hotel to its collection, as they’ve received approval from Mexico’s Federal Economic Competition Commission, COFECE, to acquire the City Express brand portfolio.
In October 2022, Marriott announced it intended to purchase City Express’ portfolio for $100 million, including 152 hotels and 17,356 rooms across 75 cities in Mexico. City Express operates hotels under several different brands.
Marriott has said they’d incorporate the City Express brand by adding its signature “by Marriott” endorsement. I guess the hotels will become City Express by Marriott? Each City Express brand had its own personality, with the Centro hotels being in the middle of major cities but the Junior hotels offering only basic amenities.
While acquiring the rights to many existing properties, Marriott sees this as their way to significantly enter the Latin America/Caribbean markets.
“This transaction with Hoteles City Express is a strategic win for Marriott and our customers, associates and owners and franchisees,” said Anthony Capuano, Chief Executive Officer, Marriott International. “We’re excited to enter a new lodging category – the popular affordable midscale segment where we see significant potential. With City Express by Marriott, we will be providing our customers with more choice through a new, approachable, moderate-priced offering, increasing opportunity for owners and franchisees as well as associates.”
Receiving regulatory approval from the Mexican government puts Marriott one step closer to acquiring City Express and bringing its hotels under the Marriott Bonvoy umbrella.
Marriott now expects the transaction, announced in October 2022, could close in the second quarter of 2023, subject to the satisfaction of other customary closing conditions.
I’m ready to update my list of Marriott Bonvoy hotel brands when the deal closes. 🙂
