We’ve had a Hertz reservation on hold for a couple of months. It was for a two-day rental from Newark, NJ and I booked through a Priceline link from Autoslash. I’ve been tracking the rental, and I’d get an alert about a lower price every few days.
Eventually, I received an alert about a lower price from Hertz, but we didn’t book it because it was for a Tesla (Here’s why I didn’t want to rent an EV for this trip). I stuck with the initial reservation, even if it was a few dollars more, because I wanted to use President Circle status to skip the counter.
Here’s a breakdown of the original price quote:
When I arrived in Newark, my name was on the Hertz board with instructions to pick a car from the President Circle area. I drove to the exit gate where I received my rental agreement. I also received an email with the breakdown of rental charges.
My $169 rental was now $128.
The biggest changes are a lower daily rate ($50 instead of $52.48) and a $25 promotional coupon. The other differences are the service charges & taxes, which are $10 less (some of which can be attributed to the lower rental amount.)
I’ve tried but I can’t determine where the $25 off came from. I’m not complaining but I want to know if I can use it again. Based on experience, I’m worried when unknown discounts show up on rentals.
I’m not going to worry about it. My only regret is that I didn’t know about the discounted price sooner. I wouldn’t have kept trying to find a lower rate if I did.
