In early 2019, I considered staying at The Chatwal in Manhattan. This was just before Marriott Bonvoy became a thing and we were all preparing for a massive devaluation of Marriott points.
The Chatwal is a beautiful hotel with a checkered history, which is why we wanted to stay there. I ended up not booking the hotel as I couldn’t rationalize spending 120,000 Marriott points for a 2-night stay. I knew it was possibly my last chance to stay with points but I was OK with my decision.
That was, until recently when Hyatt acquired the brands and management platform from Dream Hotel Group, which owns The Chatwal. The hotel left Marriott Bonvoy and was the first hotel from the acquisition to join World of Hyatt as a JdV by Hyatt.
Would I have another chance to stay at this hotel? Not at these prices. Hyatt added The Chatwal as a Category 8 hotel. A single-night stay costs 40,000 points. That’s the highest Hyatt category and the same as the Park Hyatt.
Revenue rates at the hotel run from $750 to $1,000 so you’re getting 1.8 to 2.5 cents per point, which is not fantastic for Hyatt redemptions, but isn’t horrible either.
If you don’t want to spend that much to stay at The Chatwal, you can always drop in for a drink at The Lambs Club. This is what we did before we headed to Broadway for a show. We entered by the main door so we could walk through the beautiful art deco lobby.
When we got to the bar, the staff said that since it was early, we could have a seat in the dining room next to the fireplace, which we accepted.
It was a great way to get a feel for the hotel without having to pay to stay there.
It’s possible to grab a room at off-peak pricing for mid-week stays, which only cost 35,000 points. With so many other options in New York, I can’t see us paying that much to stay at The Chatwal. While it has a great location if you’re going to see shows, I still can’t justify paying what the hotel is charging for rooms.
