Avelo Airlines is a relatively new ultra low cost U.S. carrier headquartered in Houston, Texas. It previously operated charter flights as Casino Express Airlines and Xtra Airways, before transitioning to scheduled operations and rebranding as Avelo Airlines on April, 2021.
Avelo has grown quickly and, to date, services 44 cities. Most of them are small- and mid-sized but they also fly into some larger airports, such as ones in Las Vegas, Orlando, Nashville, etc.
However here’s a fun fact – beginning on June 22nd, Avelo will fly between Wilmington and Wilmington. Yep, they’re going to have a direct flight between Delaware’s Wilmington Airport (ILG) and North Carolina’s Wilmington International Airport – (ILM).
The flights will occur on Thursdays and Sundays.
Flight | From | ETD | To | ETA |
XP 575 | Wilmington (ILG) | 1:20 p.m. | Wilmington (ILM) | 2:50 p.m. |
XP 576 | Wilmington (ILM) | 3:30 p.m. | Wilmington (ILG) | 4:50 p.m. |
There has never been a boarding pass where the departure and arrival airports were both Wilmington, so that’s kind of cool.
Of course, there are plenty of other cities that share a name:
- Portland, ME and Portland, OR
- Nashville, TN and Nashville, IN
- Springfield, IL and Springfield, OR
- Kansas City, KS and Kansas City, MO
- Long Beach, CA and Long Beach, WA
- Austin, TX and Austin, MN
- Manhattan, KS and Manhattan, NY
- Miami, OH and Miami, FL
- Brooklyn, NY and Brooklyn, CA
- And we won’t even go into how many “Clarksvilles” there are (I’ve always been a big Monkees fan), among other cities with popular names
However it appears that the only other cities that share the same name and also have direct flights between them are the Portland (PDX) and Portland (PWM) route.
So WTG, Wilmingtons…you’ve joined a very small club!
