U.S. governors, of course, have some history in politics before they were elected to their current position. However before they began dabbling in politics, they had all sorts of interesting backgrounds. Many were, not surprisingly, lawyers. Others, not so much:
- Doug Ducey, former gov. of Arizona, was the CEO of Cold Stone Creamery
- Brian Kemp, gov. of Georgia, was involved in real estate investment and property management
- Brad Little, gov. of Idaho, sold sheep and was once president of the Idaho Wool Growers Association
- Laura Kelly, gov. of Kansas, worked at a children’s psychiatric center and a minimum-security prison for boys
- Chris Sununu, gov. of New Hampshire, was an environmental engineer
And Josh Green, who was elected the governor of Hawaii late last year, has been a family practice physician and emergency room doctor in rural HI for over 15 years. He’s the only current governor who is also a physician.
Anyway, Governor Green was in New York City not long ago, participating in meetings at the United Nations and attending a governor’s conference.
On his way back home from New York, Governor Green was on Delta flight 312, which flies from JFK to Honolulu. And he apparently put on his “Dr. Green” hat when a fellow patient had what Dr. Green said appeared to be a seizure.

According to the Honolulu Star Advertiser, the patient fell ill as they landed at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. An exact time before landing wasn’t specified. However, Dr. Green, who was reportedly sitting in the economy section, was able to provide care to a passenger, identified as a male, until the aircraft landed.
When the plane landed, it was met by first responders who transported the ill passenger to the hospital for treatment. He was reportedly in stable condition.
This wasn’t the first time that Governor Green has put on his physician’s hat during his short tenure as governor.
- In June, 2023, he assisted a man who was injured after falling from the bed of a pickup truck.
- In May, 2023, he was one of the people who stopped to help when his security detail spotted a vehicle upside down in a lava field.
It sounds as if that passenger on Gov. Green’s Delta flight was very lucky. I guess it can’t hurt to have a governor who’s also ready, willing and able to help his fellow man as needed.
