IHG Point Sale Extended, Offering Up To 80% Bonus Points

by joeheg

IHG One Rewards frequently offers promotions on purchasing points, often selling them at a discount. As a result, unless I need to reload my account, I don’t feel the need to purchase them. I recently exhausted all the points we earned when we signed up for the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card, so I’m looking for a good sale to restock. The current promotion, which started in August and was supposed to end on September 1st, has been extended for another week, until September 8th. This means that there are a few days left to purchase discounted points.

Here are the usual prices to purchase IHG Points:

  • 1,000 to 9,000 points – 1.35 cents per point
  • 10,000 to 25,000 points – 1.15 cents per point
  • 26,000 to 150,000 points – 1 cent per point

It costs more to buy fewer points but any amount of 26,000 points or more costs 1 cent each.

You can use IHG points to stay at Kimpton hotels, like this one in Key West.

I think IHG points are quite useful and provide good value as long as you don’t overpay for them. In fact, they could be the most versatile hotel loyalty point out there. You can use points from a Holiday Inn Express or Candlewood Suites to a Kimpton or Intercontinental.

I value each IHG point at 0.5 cents, which is the price you can purchase them for during one of IHG’s 100% bonus sales.

The current sale isn’t as rewarding as IHG is only offering 80% bonus points for purchases of 5,000 points or more.

The maximum number of points you can purchase from IHG per year is 150,000. That means if you were to buy 150,000 points for $1,500, you’d end up with 270,000 points after the 80% bonus. That works out to 0.56 cents per point.

If you’re considering buying points at the current price, I suggest holding off unless you need them urgently. There’s a chance that IHG might launch another promotion in a few weeks, which might offer a 100% bonus on points. However, if you’re risk-averse and know that you’ll use the points soon, you may want to buy them now, as there’s no guarantee that IHG will have another promotion immediately.

Final Thought

Of all the hotel programs, IHG is the one where I’ll purchase points without having a current use for them. When on sale, you can buy them for 0.5 to 0.56 cents each and I’ll regularly get at least 0.7 to 1 cent per point value when redeeming them.

If you can combine that with the 4th-night free benefit from the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card, buying points with an 80% bonus doesn’t look so bad.
