Thomas Hawley Tuberville is an American politician and retired college football coach who is the senior United States senator from Alabama, a seat he has held since 2021. Before entering politics, Tuberville was the head football coach at Auburn University from 1999 to 2008. (thanks, Wikipedia!)
Tommy Tuberville’s had his share of controversies since taking office. However his hot button activity (or rather, inactivity) has been that, for over 6 months now, he’s blocked the promotions of all general and flag officers pending on the Senate floor. Why? Because he disapproves the Defense Department’s policy of paying for the travel of service members seeking abortions or reproductive care across state lines.
Regardless of how Tuberville feels about abortion, these military holds have caused a cascading effect in our armed services. When high-level officers can’t assume command, all the people who are under those commands are also put in limbo. They can’t get their pay raises, can’t move to new stations and can’t make decisions about their families’ lives. And now,. with Hamas’ attack on Israel, these holdups are now a potential threat to national security. And yet Tuberville just keeps trying to blame the Pentagon and the White House.
Needless to say, it’s made him a particularly unpopular person with politicians on either side of the aisle.
Meanwhile, back in July, when Joe Biden was going to Europe to focus on U.S. alliances and NATO, Tuberville, showing another side of his sweetness and likability, mocked Biden by saying, “You watch Joe Biden over in Europe. I mean, I’m afraid he’s going to fall down every time I turn on television.”
I guess Tommy has a short memory. But Jason Cooper, a 15-year fashion industry vet, doesn’t.
Cooper found the footage of when Tuberville took his own spill a couple of years ago. He was on a private (now-defunct) Miami Air plane, holding a personal bag in his right hand and a carry on in his left. He took the first step with his right foot, followed by his left foot landing on the same step. He then decided to take the stairs one by one – first with his right foot, the next one with his left…and that’s when he lost his footing and slid down the rest of the stairway on his behind.
Here’s a video of the momentous occasion.
Old people fall all the time. Here's 60 year old Tommy Tuberville falling down some stairs in 2014 before losing to UVA in… wait for it… the Military Bowl. https://t.co/MoSYxZNRai pic.twitter.com/pBOZ5HZ0eE
