China Eastern Business Class Offered “Imported Dog Food” on Menu

by SharonKurheg

Different cultures eat different things. There are foods that others say are “ethnically American,” and there are foods well known to be “ethnically” from other places. Canada’s Nanaimo Bars. Vietnamese phở. And, don’t tell Andy Luten, but some Icelandic restaurants still serve puffin.

When you fly, especially if you choose first or business class, you may get a choice of these “ethnic” foods. JAL’s current menu for first class is an excellent example:

a menu with green writingImported dog food with okra? I’m thinking not so much.

The post got over 1000 “likes” on Facebook, along with its share of comments:

  • Must be a hot dog? – Dai Ching
  • Mistyped #DogMeat – Peter Woo
  • Imported good are high-end – Steven Mak
  • Very good, a pet-friendly airliner – D Anny Kwan
  • “Dog food” is still better than “dog” – Joseph Chie
  • When you read the rest of the menu, almost 90% of the English is wrong. Such a joke as an international airline. – Derek Ng
  • The consequences of Google translate – Coleman So

It was then shared on Reddit, where the photo got its own share of comments:

  • Apparently, economy class passengers only get domestic dog food. – 2gun_cohen
  • Besides the legions of English teachers in China. There’s the corp of unemployed English & Linguistics postgraduates. Chinglish on China Eastern is a political choice, at this point. – D4nCh0
  • Dog food can be canned and is safe to eat. If imported, it can have high safety standards. Standards that are through the woof – SuperSpread (Note from Sharon: whomp whomp)
  • If it’s business class I expect my imported dog food to be 96% air dried organic beef. – Dogtaliya
  • The vanilla shrimp is what grosses me out more – Deviatorz

More than one commenter also asked to see the menu in Chinese to get a crack at translation.

Multiple social media entities, including The Independent and The Mirror, have reached out to China Eastern Airlines for comment, but have not received a response.

I’m glad they use the imported dog food. I’ve heard the domestic stuff is terrible.
