For nearly two decades, we’ve been traveling to the Texas Hill Country, a beautiful region located to the west of Austin and northeast of San Antonio. The area doesn’t have an official boundary, but many resources online can help you figure out where it starts and ends. Initially, we used to come here to visit Schlitterbahn, an amazing water park. However, over the years, we have discovered so much more. We’ve gone tubing down the rivers, savored different styles of Texas barbecue, explored the wine-growing area, and even ventured into some caves. On our latest trip, we did something new and visited a distillery. We had a fantastic time and can’t wait to go back!
Our visit to a distillery was unplanned. During our trip, we revisited Guadalupe Brewing Company. We posted a picture of ourselves wine-tasting at Dry Comal Creek Vineyards on Facebook a few days later. One of our friends mentioned that we only needed to visit a distillery to complete the ‘brewery-winery-distillery trifecta.’ We accepted the challenge and were lucky enough to find a well-known distillery within driving distance in Dripping Springs, TX.

Brief History of Deep Eddy Vodka
Deep Eddy Vodka was first launched in 2010 in Austin, Texas. The brand was named after Deep Eddy Pool, a popular swimming spot among locals in Austin. The founders of Deep Eddy Vodka, Clayton Christopher and Chad Auler, created the brand with the goal of producing a high-quality, American-made vodka that was affordable and accessible to everyone.
The original Deep Eddy Vodka was made using corn and was distilled ten times, which gave it a smooth and clean taste. In 2012, the company released a new flavor, Deep Eddy Ruby Red Vodka, which was made with real grapefruit juice. This flavor quickly became one of the company’s most popular products and helped to establish Deep Eddy Vodka as a leading brand in the flavored vodka category.
This is also how we first discovered Deep Eddy’s products. It helped that our favorite restaurant stopped serving their homemade grapefruit martini around this time. While my homemade version is pretty awesome (Note from Sharon: agreed), it’s much easier to just go to the store and buy a bottle.
Visiting The Deep Eddy Tasting Room
When you enter the tasting room, you’re in the gift shop. Here, you can purchase T-shirts, souvenirs and, not surprisingly, vodka.
There’s a small bar, but everything is bigger in Texas. Head through the shop to reach the tasting area. This wasn’t what I expected. Since we were visiting on a Saturday, the place was pretty packed. There was live music since we were close to Austin and you can’t go anywhere without there being a band. Besides the stage, the focal point was the bar. From there, they served cocktails made with a variety of Deep Eddy products.
The tasting room has an industrial feel, which makes sense because the space was previously the Deep Eddy distillery. When production moved to a larger space in nearby Buda, TX, the area was converted into a tasting room.
Our group ordered a variety of options from the menu. Drinks are $10, and it’s an extra $3 to get your drink in a Mason jar, which makes for a nice souvenir to bring home. You can also do a tasting of four flavors of Deep Eddy vodka.
We spent a while in the area, listening to the music and enjoying our beverages. If you’re hungry, a BBQ food truck is often on-site, serving on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. No other outside food or drinks are allowed.
If you’re planning to visit the Deep Eddy Vodka distillery, it’s important to note that the tasting room is no longer used for production. Deep Eddy Vodka is now produced at a state-of-the-art distillery 25 miles away. However, if you’re looking for a cool place to spend an hour or so during the scorching hot weather, the tasting room is still a great option.
