Looks Like Ryanair Has a New Snarkmeister

Ryanair is not an airline I would ever fly on. You do you, but I’m just not a fan of ultra low cost airlines that nickel and dime you for everything.

That being said, I’ve always been a fan of Ryanair’s social media presence. I’m not embarrassed to admit that I enjoy snark (and may or may not have my own talents for it), and their quips on Instagram, TikTok and the-platform-previously-known-as-Twitter have included some real zingers.

Since I daresay, they’re a pleasure to read (even though I don’t think I’d find pleasure in flying with them). I was a little disappointed when I read that Michael Corcoran, who essentially built Ryanair’s snarky, savage and sarcastic social media brand, had resigned, citing a toxic culture within the company.

Here’s what Corcoran wrote on October 31st about his resignation on Twitter (X…whatever). Heads up for adult language in the explanation.

Based on various replies and reports, it sounds as if middle management was the issue. Because, as we all know, one of the top reasons for people quitting is bad bosses (there was a great write-up about this on LinkedIn earlier this year). In fact, if you Google reason for quitting, poor management, in some form or another, is almost always in the Top 5.

I felt about Corcoran leaving sort of the way I felt when the head of the head of the TSA social media team, Curtis “Blogger Bob” Burns, unexpectedly passed away in October, 2018. As you can see, Blogger Bob had a gift for making dry, mundane TSA-related topics, well, clever and funny. The people on the TSA social media team have been witty and fun ever since, but Blogger Bob had huge shoes to fill, and, as far as I’m concerned, no one has been able to fill them. I was truly concerned that Ryanair would lose its snark mojo.

As it turned out, I had nothing to fear. Corcoran was the head of the social media team, and I don’t know if they’ve found someone to take his place. But the people under him are apparently made of the same stuff. Ryanair’s social media, so far, is still thriving.

So far, so good. And for the sake of all involved, I hope things get better in terms of middle management at Ryanair.
