Travel geeks are always trying to see the best, most luxurious hotels out there. You know the kinds I mean. The ones with super soft bedding, fluffy towels, a concierge, perhaps a butler, and a view to die for.
But sometimes, if nothing else than to remind yourself to feel grateful for what you may have access to, it’s kind of nice to see what’s on the other side of the coin. You know the kind of place I mean. The one that gets more negative reviews than positive.
A Tennessee-based TikTok user known as The Sleepy Paramedic did just that by doing a walk-through of the craptastic room he was scheduled to stay in for the night. He said he was “on the way to a seminar & stopped for the night at a hotel.”
The Sleepy paramedic never divulged the name or location of the hotel. However, he did say it got 2 stars (out of 5) on Expedia. After seeing his video, I think 2 stars was a little altruistic, but as the good blog says, Your Mileage May Vary.
The video tour began inside his hotel room, covered with wood panels circa 1970s or so. He starts at the room’s entry door, which The Sleepy Paramedic said, “looks like something from a Silent Hill game.”
“And the window’s broken. But that’s all right because they’ve taken some pipe insulation, cut it to fit, and crammed it down through the hole,” he continued.
The Sleepy Paramedic also pointed out the rusted-out air conditioner (but there’s a box fan on the nightstand to make up for it), what he called an “ancient-looking” outlet, the toilet that ran continuously in the bathroom (make that a bathroom with no light switch), and (anybody surprised?) no smoke detector.
“Since it’s raining outside, there’s a good chance the ceiling’s gonna fall in with water anyway, so we don’t have to worry about fire.” Yay for making lemons into lemonade, huh? 😉
He also showed viewers the bedspread, complete with “mystery stains” and “a cigarette hole burned into the bed sheet.”
The Sleepy Paramedic wishes viewers a good night before laying on the mattress…where he revealed, “I’m sticking to the mattress.”
Here’s the video:

I admit that when I was in my 20s, I stayed in some pretty crappy places. The 10′ x 20′ hotel room in Tokyo with the curly hair on the soap. The place our college booked us for an occupational therapy convention, where we kept a running list of everything wrong with the room (it was NOTHING like The Sleepy Paramedic’s room. We’re talking dresser drawers that would open by themselves, not broken windows and a lack of a smoke detector). But none of them were as bad as this place.
It DID make me grateful for the nicer places we’ve been able to visit over the years.
