With several versions of the Discover card, every 3 months you have the opportunity to earn 5% back in specific categories, up to $75. This means that you can earn up to $300 back every year by maxing out the bonus each quarter. Since the Discover cards have no annual fee, it’s an excellent deal for cashback enthusiasts.
One drawback of the offer is that it’s not automatically applied to your account. Cardholders need to register every 3 months for the bonus. For the first three months of 2024, the 5% cash back bonus is for restaurants and drugstores.
Activate to earn 5% Cashback Bonus at Restaurants and Drug Stores from 1/1/24 (or the date which you activate 5%, whichever is later) through 3/31/24, on up to $1,500 in purchases. Restaurant purchases include those made at merchants classified as full-service restaurants, cafes, cafeterias, fast-food locations, and restaurant delivery services. Drug Store purchases include those made at stand-alone drug stores, pharmacies, online pharmacies, and some pharmacies located inside of retail stores.
You can register for the offer on the Discover website.
Before transferring your spending in these categories to a Discover card, ensure that you can’t earn more points with a different program. For instance, holders of the Chase Freedom Unlimited card earn 3% back at drugstores. If you have a premium Chase card, like the Sapphire Preferred, you can transfer those points to programs such as United or Hyatt. This way, you can potentially receive more than a 5% return on your spending, depending on how much you value points in those programs.
