It can be hard to keep track of all the little changes airlines make to their rules and prices. Even if you try to stay up to date, sometimes you might miss something. Recently, when I booked a flight with JetBlue, I saw something new that I hadn’t noticed before. Basically, the airline has made a change that means you have to pay extra for something that used to be included for free. In other words, they’ve added a new fee for something that used to be part of the base ticket price.
JetBlue has several classes of seats to choose from:
- Mint Premium Travel
- Even More Space
- Core Experience
- Blue Basic
Except for Mint, which is a lie-flat business class suite, all the other seats are the same. Even More Space provides several extra inches of legroom from the Core seats. Blue Basic also offers the same seats as Core, but the ticket has more restrictions (it’s JetBlue’s version of a basic economy ticket).
So when I went to book a flight on JetBlue’s website, I noticed something different when choosing my seat. While there only used to be a choice between Even More Space and Core seats, there was now an upcharge for a middle category called “Core Preferred.”
The orange seats are Even More Space, while the Blue seats are the Core Preferred ones.
Here’s how they’re described on the fare breakdown page.
If you look at the JetBlue website, here’s the only difference between Core and Core Preferred is the seat location:
Window and aisle seats close to the front of the Core cabin
JetBlue was one of the holdouts that didn’t charge extra for a better seat assignment. Most other airlines charge for windows, aisle, and seats towards the front of the cabin. Delta has been doing this with their “Preferred” seats for years.
Mosaic members are able to select preferred seats for no charge as long as they do not purchase a Blue Basic fare.
