Virgin Voyages prides itself on not being your typical cruise line. They don’t allow kids. Tips are included in the cruise price. They don’t have a drink package. They’ve abandoned the idea of a buffet in favor of, essentially, a quick-serve food court. And, of course, the maidenhead for their second ship, Valiant Lady, as well as their third ship, Resilient Lady, were like no other in the industry.
So it’s probably not so much of a surprise as a “what took them so long?,” when Virgin Voyages announced a new program for this summer. With so many remote workers and digital nomads out there, Virgin Voyages is introducing four monthlong cruise packages, custom-made for those who want to travel but also work while they’re on the road.
The month-long pass, the first of its kind, includes four back-to-back voyages on the Scarlet Lady, a high-end cruise ship that will be sailing through the Mediterranean all summer. They’re calling it the Scarlet Summer Season Pass.
“Inspired by Richard Branson’s belief and track record that brilliant work is best paired with a hearty dose of fun, we’re welcoming Sailors on board Scarlet Lady for a full month to help them achieve that perfect work-life balance,” Virgin Voyages said in an announcement for the new promotion. “Take a vacation away from your monotonous work-from-home set up (sorry, but…not sorry) and start taking calls from your private balcony overlooking the Mediterranean sea.”
You’ll be able to enjoy a central balcony cabin for two, a dedicated concierge, free laundry service, a $10 daily coffee credit, access to a private rooftop and, of course, free high-speed Wi-Fi so you’re always connected for work.
In addition, you’ll be entitled to everything regular cruisers get—all meals and snacks at more than 20 eateries on the ship, nightly entertainment, and tips included. And did we mention no kids?
The pass starts at $9,990 (that’s a 30% savings value) for a two-guest cabin and is available for four monthlong cruises that depart in June, July, August, and September. Each cruise will depart from different ports such as Barcelona, Marseille, and Palma de Mallorca and spend four weeks touring around the Mediterranean.
Our take on this
This is a pretty smart move. I mean, Virgin Voyages’ demographics are from 18 to 90s, so there are a bunch of people in there who (A) still work (B) love the brand (C) could have the ability to do this…if they were willing to fork out $10k for 2 people in a cabin for a month or four.
It’s obviously not for everyone – for every person who doesn’t have a dedicated work office, there’s someone who needs to do their work on a private line, or who still have real-life responsibilities, such a kids, parents, pets, etc. But for those who have a little more freedom, and money…sure, why not?
