Reminder: ATL Access Will Be A Mess, Starting Today

by SharonKurheg

Just a friendly reminder that access to ATL is going to be a mess for (hopefully “just”) the next six weeks, while the MARTA airport station will be temporarily closed for a construction/renovation project.

Construction has been ongoing at Airport Station, and the project has reached a point where work can be completed more safely and efficiently with a temporary closure.

MARTA worked with the Airport to establish the construction timetable using historical travel data. It was determined the travel lull experienced post-Spring Break and pre-Memorial Day was the best opportunity to complete this necessary work.

Station improvements will include:

  • New RideStore
  • Public art installation
  • Replacement of all signage
  • Renovation of employee areas
  • New canopy complementing Airport canopy
  • New flooring on concourse and platforms levels
  • New wall cladding, ceilings, and lighting in the concourse
  • Rehabilitation of existing elevator and installation of new elevator

The 6-week project is scheduled to last from Monday, April 8th through Sunday, May 19th. Here’s the latest information from MARTA:

They also have a video for information:

This page of MARTA’s website also has the rail schedule during the closure, which will be updated on a weekly basis.

They say that the six-week closure will ensure the safety of customers and workers and significantly reduce construction time by 17 months.
