When visiting New York City, we’ll pick which airport to use based on schedule, price and our plans for that trip. We’ll end up flying through JFK airport a few times a year, and our preferred way to get to Manhattan is to take the JFK AirTrain to Jamaica Station. I don’t keep up with all of the changes happening at JFK, so I was surprised to see that on our trip in December 2023, the AirTrain no longer stopped at Terminal One.
The New Terminal One At JFK
This change in the AirTrain was due to the construction of the New Terminal One. This major project will take years to complete but will result in a totally rebuilt terminal that meets modern expectations. However, to work on the old terminal, they had to stop the AirTrain from going through the area.
In December, passengers needing to reach Terminal One had to exit at Terminal Eight and take a shuttle bus to Terminal One. Shortly after I took this picture, JFK AirTrain started running a dedicated train from the Terminal Eight station to Terminal One in January 2024, eliminating the need for bus service between terminals.
Regular AirTrain Service Returns to Terminal One
On our most recent visit, the JFK AirTrain appeared to have returned to normal service, including a stop at Terminal One. Service from both Howard Beach and Jamaica Stations stops at Federal Circle before heading to Terminals 1, 4, 5, 7, and 8 and back to Federal Circle and beyond.
Once again, the Airport Terminals Loop train will visit all terminals.
Although the reopening of Terminal One station marks a significant change for AirTrain users, the event happened with minimal fanfare. There was hardly any announcement made on social media to publicize the reopening. I assume that the airport authorities are uncertain about whether they will need to close the loop again and want to avoid any confusion for passengers who are planning on a quick transfer between terminals.
But for now, enjoy being able to take the JFK AirTrain directly to Terminal One once again.
