Snooze in Style: Westin’s Heavenly Bed Gets a Makeover

Have you ever noticed how hotels try to stand out from the crowd? It’s not easy, as most hotels offer similar amenities and experiences. Some hotels try to market themselves as “healthy” options, with upgraded gyms, Peloton Bikes, and yoga mats in the rooms. Others target business travelers or families. But do you remember the first hotel that used the comfort of their beds as a reason to stay with them? It was Westin! In 1999, they introduced The Westin Heavenly Bed.

In a 2005 interview, Barry S. Sternlicht, Chairman and CEO of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc., discussed how Westin launched the Heavenly Bed and how others in the industry responded.

The industry thought we were nuts when we introduced this fluffy, all-white bed and did this huge PR campaign where we trotted this bed out to landmarks around the world including the New York Stock Exchange, Grand Central Station and the Space Needle in Seattle.

The Westin Heavenly Bed has been in use for 25 years and is still regarded as one of the most comfortable hotel beds in the industry. Westin has sold over 500,000 of their beds on the Westin Store website.  Saving $1,000 on a Westin bed is even a Platinum Choice Benefit for Marriott Bonvoy members.

Now that other hotels have caught up to Westin in terms of bed comfort, Westin is introducing the next generation of Heavenly Beds.

The Next Generation Westin Heavenly Bed

For Heavenly Bed devotees, what can you expect from the new version of the bed? Will this be an upgrade, or will it end up being like New Coke? Here’s an excerpt from the press release with plenty of adjectives describing the new bed, from the mattress to the color of the sheets and pillowcases and, finally, the removal of the bed skirt and bolster pillow.

From the plush-top mattress and its innovative silver fiber weave to the added layers of temperature-regulating gel-infused memory foam, the next generation Heavenly Bed mattress offers a superior sleep experience further enhanced by the significant upgrades to bedding design and materials. All bedding components have been upgraded to hypoallergenic materials and the blended duvet insert was created with a unique mix of materials and wrapped in smooth cotton, which is designed to regulate temperature and keep guests cool for a better night’s sleep. Replacing the previous all-white aesthetic of the legacy bed with Westin’s new, modern design ethos, the next generation Heavenly Bed now includes a new charcoal blanket and full-frame piping on pillowcases to provide a warm residential feel and cloud-like appearance. The richly woven blanket features a tone-on-tone pattern inspired by the brand’s biophilic design principle and serves as both an added layer of warmth and a beautiful residentially inspired coverlet. Additional design updates include sateen linens with natural matte finish and the removal of the bed skirt and bolster pillow, reflecting a more modern sleep experience and guest input.

I’ll say this about the Westin Bed: It looks comfortable. We don’t stay at Westin hotels often, but the next time we do, I’m looking forward to checking out the next generation of the bed that’s become a travel icon.
