As an Orlando resident, I’m always excited to learn about new long-haul routes being added to MCO’s schedule. I had the opportunity to fly on the second-longest flight from Orlando on the MCO-HNL route with Hawaiian Airlines before it was discontinued. I also came close to booking the longest flight from Orlando when considering a trip to Vietnam on Emirates, with a layover in Dubai.
One of the longest nonstop flights from Orlando to Frankfurt is on Discover Airlines. For those unfamiliar, Discover Airlines has only been in operation since September 2023. It was previously known as Eurowings Discover, a division of Lufthansa’s Eurowings. While still owned by Lufthansa, it’s a distinct airline specializing in medium—and long-haul leisure flights from Frankfurt.
Excitingly, Discover recently announced an expansion of its Munich hub. Starting in 2025, Discover will introduce long-haul flights to Florida, Canada, and Namibia.
With two A330s based in Munich, Discover Airlines will fly the following routes:
- Starting March 3, 2025 – Three weekly flights to Orlando (Monday, Wednesday & Friday)
- Starting April 1, 2025 – Three weekly flights to Windhoek, Namibia (Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday)
- Starting April 12, 2025 – Up to five weekly flights to Calgary (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday & Sunday)
Each destination will be served year-round, and Discover Airlines is the only carrier to offer direct connections to each of these cities.
Discover Airlines already has once- to twice-daily departures from Orlando to Frankfurt, so adding flights to Munich will increase its presence at MCO. While Discover Airlines is focused on the German leisure market, its flights are fed by Lufthansa short-haul flights through Europe. They’re apparently counting on the leisure travelers wanting to fly to Orlando year-round.
