JFK Airport in New York City is undergoing a multi-year renovation project, which includes work on many of the terminal buildings.
- $9.5 billion for Terminal 1
- $1.5 billion Terminal 4 for Delta (this one is complete)
- $4.2 billion for Terminal 6, with investors like JetBlue.
- $425 million Terminal 8 for American Airlines (this one is also complete)
Whenever you have to do major construction while keeping an airport open, it can lead to some disruption of services. In 2019, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey encountered issues with people leaving their cars on the road to LaGuardia Airport due to ongoing construction. Unlike LaGuardia, JFK Airport offers an alternative mode of transportation in the form of the JFK AirTrain, providing travelers with an efficient way to access the airport without solely relying on driving.
The downside of AirTrain is the $8.50 one-way fare between the terminals and Jamaica or Howard Beach stations. To encourage more people to take public transportation, Governor Kathy Hochul and the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey announced that the AirTrain JFK single ride fare will be reduced by 50 percent starting July 1 through Labor Day.
“With transformational construction underway at JFK, we’re taking steps to mitigate travel delays and affirm what’s always been true – there’s no better option than taking the train to the plane,” Governor Hochul said. “As we kick off a busy summer, we’re making it more affordable for travelers to utilize the AirTrain, offering New Yorkers and visitors from around the world the best-in-class travel experience they deserve.”
We prefer taking the AirTrain when flying through JFK because it gives us easy access to the subway and the LIRR, depending on where we are staying in New York.
If you’re getting a ride to the airport, the Port Authority has also opened a drop-off/pick-up lot at the on-airport AirTrain JFK Lefferts Blvd station. This station offers a free 8-minute ride on the AirTrain to the airport terminals while avoiding some of the airport traffic.
