The 10 Most Beautiful Train Stations in The World

by SharonKurheg

As an underground entity, those who design train stations have a choice; they can be relatively plain and boring, such as many subway stations in NYC.

Or they can turn the space into a work of art.

A man named James Lewis appears to love arts and culture. His presence on Twitter (currently known as X) has photo after photo of beautiful, artistic places in the world where you wouldn’t necessarily expect to see beauty. We’re talking bridges, a 2,400 year old mosaic in Türkeye, a Roman mosaic found under an Italian vineyard.

Sometimes, Lewis will do a thread in relation to the art he appreciates. Surreal archeological discoveries. Real life locations that inspired famous paintings. Artwork discovered in Pompeii. You get the point.

But a couple of weeks ago, Lewis caught my attention with his thread of “the most beautiful metro stations on Earth.” They are indeed gorgeous.

Wait! There are even more!

That’s 10. There are 30 in total. I won’t list them all, because you can see them on his Twitter feed just as easily as I can. But take a look…some of them are just gorgeous! And I was surprised…I’ve been to 3 of them! How about you?

Placing City Hall station on the list is absurd, since it’s not readily accessible. Might as well add the former Penn Station, too. But I know it’s not YMMV’s list.

Anyway, me thinks Moscow could easily take a few of the spots … while visiting there, I woke up early everyday just to snap photos of some of the more renowned stations, before rush hour set in. BTW, those older metro doors slam shut like no other!

Click on the link to see the other stations. Moscow is VERY well represented. 😉
