How to Use TripIt Pro’s Price Alerts to Your Advantage

by joeheg

I’ve been paying for TripIt Pro for many years. It’s been worth the $49 fee to get immediate updates on flight changes and travel information quicker than the airline alerts. But, for the first time since I’ve had a subscription, I received an alert about a price change, which might have saved me more than what I paid for the service.

TripIt Pro Price Alerts

One of the benefits of paying for TripIt Pro is getting price alerts on flights you’re tracking.

Fare Tracker

Notifies you if your airfare price drops after you book

Since I book most of our trips using frequent flyer points, there’s not much advantage to using TripIt Pro to track the cost of our flights. However, for an upcoming Southwest Airlines flight, I paid for our flights so I could use the $75 credit from the Southwest Priority credit card.

Only a few days after I booked the flight, I received an email from TripIt.

The price of the flight had dropped to $169.98, which was less than I paid. Since Southwest allows you to rebook flights with no change fees, this was more than the TripIt Pro fee for the year.

Unfortunately, my original flight cost included a $25 EarlyBird fee. This means I only saved $24.48 by rebooking my flight, which we now have as a credit to be used in the next year.

Now that many US airlines allow you to cancel or rebook with no fees, it pays to have a service like TripIt Pro to monitor your flights and notify you when the price drops, and you’re eligible for a refund.

The one issue with tripit price alerts is that they don’t have a way to filter out basic economy fares.
For instance I usually book regular economy on AS and I often get a fare reduction alert within a week but nearly all of the time it is for the basic economy fare which I don’t want. I have asked them about this and their software can’t distinguish between the two apparently. On the other hand occasionally I have been pleasantly surprised and rebooked for a lower rate.

This!

I get Tripit Pro for free through work, but it’s been annoying that this makes the price tracking useless to me. I think I may disable the feature because of it.
