The Virgin Brand, conceived by Sir Richard Branson, is undeniably one of the most well-developed “lifestyle” brands globally. Whether it’s an airline, hotel, cruise line, or space travel, you know what to anticipate when the Virgin name is involved. You can expect a sleek exterior with a service-oriented product that maintains a lighthearted approach (except for Virgin Galactic, which I trust takes space travel very seriously).
It was surprising to learn that Virgin didn’t have a presence in the US co-brand credit card market. While Bank of America previously offered Virgin Atlantic-branded credit cards, applications for the card were stopped in March. Following this, Virgin Red announced a partnership with Synchrony Bank to introduce the Virgin Red Rewards World Elite Mastercard.
What is Virgin Red?
Virgin Red is a rewards club from Virgin. Currently, you earn points when shopping through their portal or when staying at Virgin Hotels.
It’s good to treat you. We’re the rewards club from Virgin. Earn Virgin Points with your favorite brands, then spend them on rewards across the Virgin family and beyond.
- Earn points on your everyday shopping
- Reward yourself by spending your points
- Everyone can join, it’s free and your points last forever
In addition, you can link your Virgin Atlantic account with Virgin Red and combine points from the programs to book hotel stays, flights and Virgin Voyages cruises. This also means points transferred from American Express, Bilt, Capital One, Citi, and Chase can be used for any use of Virgin Points (which is the combined currency of the programs.)
Virgin Red Rewards MasterCard
While the launch of the Virgin Red card was celebrated with this comically large version of the card, details were scarce.
That was in May. Now, Virgin Red is offering a “waiting list” for people who want to get first access to the card. You can sign up at https://www.virgin.com/en-us/virgin-red/rewards-credit-card-waitlist. What benefits will the card have, and will you earn bonus points when flying on Virgin Atlantic, staying at a Virgin Hotel, or taking a Virgin Voyages cruise? Patience, young Padawan.
As a cardholder, you’ll be able to earn points on every purchase and enjoy exclusive travel benefits. We’ll share more details about the full list of benefits and perks closer to the launch.
What Now?
I suppose all we can do is wait to see what the card’s earning structure will be, what sign-up bonus will be offered, and whether people who are interested in earning travel points will want to sign up for a card from Synchrony Bank. I signed up for the waiting list, even if that only means I’ll get to see what the benefits are before submitting an application.
