Prepare for Holiday Savings with Discover Card’s 5% Q4 Cashback Categories

by joeheg

With several versions of the Discover card, you can earn 5% back in specific categories every 3 months on the first $1,500, earning up to $75 cashback. This means you can earn up to $300 annually by maxing out the quarterly bonus. Since Discover cards have no annual fee, it’s an excellent deal for those who want to earn cashback.

One drawback of the offer is that it’s not automatically applied to your account. Instead, cardholders need to register every 3 months for the bonus. For the fourth quarter of 2024, the 5% cashback bonus is available for Amazon.com and Target. Discover has consistently offered a similar promotion over the past few years, allowing customers to earn 5% back on their holiday shopping.

Activate to earn 5% Cashback Bonus at Amazon.com and Target from 10/1/24 (or the date on which you activate 5%, whichever is later) through 12/31/24, on up to $1,500 in purchases.

Amazon.com purchases include those made through the Amazon.com checkout, like digital downloads, Amazon Fresh orders, Amazon Local Deals, Amazon Prime subscriptions, and items sold by third party merchants through Amazon.com’s marketplace. This also includes purchases in-store at Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh. Purchases made online and in-store with Whole Foods Market are not included in the promotion.

Target purchases include those made in-store at Target, Target.com, or through the Target app. Purchases from individual merchants and stand-alone stores within physical Target locations may not be eligible for this promotion. Purchases made online or through the Target app from Target affiliates, individual merchants, or stand-alone stores may not be eligible for this promotion, including, but not limited to, targetoptical.com and targetphoto.com.

Registration

You can register for the offer on the Discover website.

Before transferring your spending in these categories to a Discover card, ensure that you can’t earn more points with a different program. For instance, many cards have added offers for both of these merchants for the holiday shopping season in the past years. While earning 5% is a good return, you might prefer to earn bonus AMEX Membership Rewards if you receive a targeted AMEX offer.
