Smart & Easy Fix For Hotel Mistake We All Make

When you don’t travel often, there are plenty of tricks for hotel rooms that you may not know about simply because you didn’t even know to look for them. Stuff like:

Then there are the hacks/fixes that don’t require any sort of special know-how or talent as much as common sense:

I just learned another one of those “common sense” fixes. It piqued my interest because it’s based on something that, as silly as it is, I know I do all the time in hotels (and I consider myself to be relatively well-traveled). What’s more, I bet lots of other well-traveled people do this silly thing, too.

The problem

Have you ever left your hotel room – especially if you’re in a hotel that has long hallways – and have no idea of which direction the elevator is?

I do it all the flippin’ time. It’s partially because I’m in an unfamiliar location and partially because with little to no signage and the hallway usually looking the same in both directions, there’s just no indicator to know which way to go. Of course, I’d hope that my memory would kick in, but for whatever reason, “Go left (or right, if applicable) to get to the elevator” never stays there. So I invariably go in the wrong direction, realize the elevator isn’t there, and have to turn around and start all over.

It’s a little thing, I know. Silly, really. But it’s annoying. And the fix is SO simple; I don’t understand why I hadn’t figured it out myself.

The fix

I discovered the fix on TikTok (who says TikTok is bad???). It came from a flight attendant who, of course, spends many nights in different hotel rooms. Anyway, she leaves her shoes facing the direction of the elevator. And that way, she knows which direction to go when she leaves the room.

Here’s the video:

Easy peasy lemon squeezy, huh?

Of course, it doesn’t have to be your shoes. It can be an arrow written on a Post-it note and then stuck on the back of the door. It could be just about anything you can leave by or on the door that gives you a quick reminder that “Hey, the elevator is THIS WAY —>.”

Anyway, I fully realize it’s a non-life-altering fix for a non-life-altering problem. But I appreciated it. 🙂
