Chase’s The Edit vs. Visa Luxury Hotel Collection: Which Offers Better Perks?

by joeheg

The Chase Sapphire Reserve is marketed as the ultimate travel companion for sophisticated jet-setters. Its $550 annual fee might seem steep, but the card comes packed with valuable features. These include a $300 annual travel credit, primary car insurance coverage, Priority Pass membership and Global Entry/TSA Precheck reimbursement.

One lesser-known benefit of the card is access to The Edit by Chase Travel, a curated selection of luxury hotels, resorts, and spas. This exclusive program is only available to Sapphire Reserve and J.P. Morgan Reserve cardholders.

What Is The Edit by Chase Travel?

The Edit is a curated selection of world-class hotels, resorts and spas. Booking through Chase Travel with your eligible Chase credit card unlocks distinctive cardmember benefits. These benefits include daily breakfast for 2, $100 property credit, a room upgrade at check-in (if available), early check-in and late check-out (if available), a welcome gift and complimentary wifi. The $100 property credit may be used toward dining, spa or other activities at the property. The Edit benefits are only available when you book using your eligible Chase credit card through chasetravel.com.

An Alternative for Non-Sapphire Reserve Holders

If you don’t have a Sapphire Reserve, you can still enjoy premium hotel perks through the Visa Luxury Hotel Collection (VLHC). This program is open to anyone with an eligible Visa premium card, such as Visa Signature or Visa Infinite. Even no-annual-fee cards, like the Disney® Visa, qualify.

With VLHC, you can still enjoy complimentary breakfast, room upgrades when available, and late check-out upon request. However, the benefits differ slightly from The Edit. For example, VLHC provides a $25 food and beverage credit and VIP Guest status instead of a $100 property credit or welcome gift.

Unlike The Edit, VLHC has a dedicated website that’s easier to navigate. It’s worth noting, though, that the selection of participating hotels may differ between the two programs.

Key Differences Between The Edit and VLHC

The most noticeable distinction lies in the benefits. The Edit provides a higher-value property credit and additional perks like welcome amenities and early check-in, while VLHC has a smaller food and beverage credit and focuses on VIP Guest status. Prices and inventory also vary between the two platforms, making it worthwhile to compare offers if you have access to both.

For example, The Edit’s offer for The Setai in Miami Beach includes the $100 hotel credit, breakfast for two, and the potential for early check-in.

Meanwhile, VLHC’s offer at the same hotel features breakfast and a $25 F&B credit but no property-wide spending benefit.

Final Thoughts

Both programs have their strengths. If you’re a Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholder, The Edit offers more value and better perks overall. However, the lack of a proper filtering option can make browsing a little frustrating.

For those with Visa Signature or Infinite cards, VLHC is an excellent alternative that doesn’t require a premium credit card. The perks are slightly more limited, but the program is still a fantastic way to enhance your stay at select luxury properties.

Since prices and hotel inventories vary between the two, it’s smart to check both platforms before booking. It’s also worth exploring other luxury booking options, such as Virtuoso or Hyatt Prive, to ensure you’re getting the best value for your trip.

Thanks for writing this. The truth is Mastercard too has a luxury hotel program and it’s usually pretty useless, much like the Visa hotels program. The other program anyone can access is ClassicTravel.com and through that you can access an agent who has access to multiple programs. The one point, is the best programs are by far the two run by American Express Platinum (Fine Hotels and Resorts & The Hotel Collection). I also talked to a hotel front desk person once and she told me, that she had worked at two FHR properties including the one I was staying at the time, and FHR gets the best upgrades because they produce more business for the hotels than any other program and it wasn’t close.
