Delta made a splash in 2020 when they introduced metal credit cards for Delta SkyMiles Platinum and Reserve American Express cardholders. But honestly, I never understood the hype around metal cards. Besides adding extra weight to my wallet, they don’t do anything a plastic card can’t.
Now, with so many transactions being contactless, the “wow” factor of a heavier card is fading fast. Personally, I avoid using metal cards in self-service machines because I’m always worried they’ll get stuck. Have you ever tried fishing one out? Not fun.
Recently, I noticed that AMEX and Delta now give cardholders a choice: stick with the metal card or opt for one made from 70% reclaimed plastic. While I couldn’t find a formal announcement or press release about this change, it’s an interesting update.

This move isn’t entirely new for AMEX, though. The American Express Green Card transitioned to reclaimed plastic in 2019, so it’s nice to see more environmentally friendly options being rolled out across their portfolio.
If you’re shopping for a premium Delta SkyMiles AMEX card, it’s great to know you can choose between the classic metal clunker and a lighter, eco-friendly version. Personally, I’d go with the reclaimed plastic—less weight, more sustainability, and no anxiety at the card reader.
