If you’ve read our blog for a while, you know that we’re Joe and Sharon, a husband and wife team. Joe is very much into the world of aviation, hotels, car rentals, points, miles, etc. (which is why/how we started writing YMMV 8 + years ago). Me? I appreciate a nice hotel room or an occasional bump into business class, but overall, I’m much less interested in that entire realm and (gasp!) am perfectly happy with a seat in economy, and a hotel room that’s merely just safe and clean (which is why you see him writing about credit cards and hotel/flight reviews, and I write about the quirky, human interest stuff).
The Aviation-Obsessed Boyfriend vs. The Amused Girlfriend
So when I saw the following story, I got quite the giggle out of it, because the girl is “so me” and the boyfriend is “so Joe.” If you’re reading this, I suspect the boyfriend might be “so you,” as well. 😉
TikToker Aoibhin Connolly shared a clip of her partner looking at his phone, while he was watching a livestream of the flight they were on, as it was landing, so he could see how it looks from the outside in real time.
In the video, she looks totally amused as she watches her boyfriend watching the flight landing. Probably about as amused as I am when I watch Joe agonize over Hyatt vs IHG vs Marriott and which free night certificate he should use at which hotel.
“Oh girls my aviation boyfriend has progressed from Flight Radar [Note from Sharon: Flightradar24, of course. Even *I* know that] and now watches the airport livestream of our flight landing,” she wrote in the text overlay of the clip. (She clarified later that he was watching Heathrow’s YouTube live stream)
In the caption of the post, she added: “And judges the pilot’s landing might I add.”
@aoibhinconnolly And judges the pilots landing might I add
The Best Reactions from Viewers
Connolly’s video has gotten hundreds of comments from people “who can relate” and then shared their reactions and similar experiences.
- Whatever you do, don’t tell him about Sky Cards! (an app developed by Flightradar24 that allows players to “capture” real flights that are in the air at the time — Shank Sinatra
- Wait until he finds Flighty. (that one’s an app that offers real-time data on flights around the world) — Alex
- My bf told me a bird hit the plane in front of us before the pilots even said anything and everyone was confused as to why the plane was going around again instead of landing! That silly app came in clutch low key – karine
- How do you do this? Asking for a friend (me, I’m the plane obsessed friend). — Laur
- Wait until he takes you to a field near Heathrow to watch A380s land — Pipp Loughran
- On my flight to Hong Kong on Monday I just watched our flight map then gossiped with the FAs [flight attendants] in the forward galley about how we were deviating further east than I’d anticipated. — Nank
- On our flight from Istanbul to Vietnam you could watch the planes own cameras outside, his dream — Gemmamcnamee
The best replies came from companies in the aviation industry:
- That’s what you call a catch 👍. — Dublin Airport
- I progressed to flying the planes😔 — Tach
- This is another level of ‘he’s the one’ 😭. — Virgin Australia
- Airline pilot here. I even do this after my flight to judge my own landing — Ayro
And finally, the one that I could relate to the most:
- Always tell my mrs what plane is flying over and from where, she couldn’t care less but I’m carrying on! – James
And that last one, my friends, would be Joe and me in a nutshell. 😉
