Last fall, we wrote about a new option that Uber had introduced. They were offering shuttle service between LaGuardia Airport and a handful of centrally-located stops in Manhattan for just $18 per person (that’s now increased to $20 per person, but still…).
The system must be working well for them, but they’ve recently expanded the service and are now offering shuttle service between John F. Kennedy International Airport and specific stops in both Manhattan and Brooklyn.
The routes
The service will run every 30 minutes from 5AM to 10:45PM, seven days a week. The current options for pick-up and drop-off are:
Route #1: Midtown Manhattan to/from JFK’s Terminal 5, with stops at:
- Port Authority Terminal (42nd St & 8th Ave)
- Grand Central Terminal (Park Ave & 42nd St)
- JFK Airport Terminal 5 Arrivals
Route #2: Midtown Manhattan to/from JFK’s Terminal 4, with stops at:
- Port Authority Terminal (42nd St & 8th Ave)
- Grand Central Terminal (Park Ave & 42nd St)
- JFK Airport Terminal 4 Arrivals
Route #3: Downtown Manhattan / Brooklyn to/from JFK’s Terminal 5, with stops at:
- Chinatown (Corner of Canal St & Lafayette St)
- Atlantic Terminal (Hanson Pl & Ashland Pl)
- JFK Airport Terminal 5 Arrivals
Route #4: Downtown Manhattan / Brooklyn to/from JFK’s Terminal 4, with stops at:
- Chinatown (Corner of Canal St & Lafayette St)
- Atlantic Terminal (Hanson Pl & Ashland Pl)
- JFK Airport Terminal 4 Arrivals
At launch, vehicles will be limited to just 14 passengers. Each rider is allowed to bring one personal item (read: a purse or backpack) and one piece of luggage (carry-on or checked bag size) weighing up to 50 pounds (so note: a checked bag, carry-on bag and personal bag won’t work). Riders can rate and tip drivers in the app, just like they can do with a regular Uber trip.
How it works
From Uber:
Request
Enter your pickup and dropoff locations, then select the Shuttle option. Review your fare and pickup time, then choose Request. You can reserve as many as 4 seats in advance.
Get picked up
You can track your shuttle’s real-time location before your scheduled pickup time. Get to the pickup spot shown on the map. We recommend arriving at least 5 minutes early. Your driver will wait a maximum of 2 minutes. You’ll get real-time Uber Shuttle updates in your Uber app.
Ride
When boarding the shuttle, check in by scanning the QR code in your Uber app.
Hop off
Your driver will take you to your designated drop-off point. Use the Uber app for walking directions to your final destination.
The price
For a limited time, the price per shuttle ride between JFK and the Manhattan/Brooklyn stops will be $10 per person (as a comparison, a subway ride ($2.90) + AirTrain ($8.25) fee for getting to JFK is $11.15, and getting a rideshare between JFK and the city can be as much as $80),
After April 30th, the fare will increase to $25 (including taxes), which is still a steal compared to a regular rideshare price.
