It seems like May is the month all the airlines have picked to make changes that affect their passengers. OK, if not literally all, there certainly have been a bunch of airline changes in the month of May! These are all the changes we’ve noticed this month:
- May 1: American Airlines boarding changes
- May 1: Changes to rules for entering United Club lounges
- Delta announced some unusual new routes (announcement in May, new routes start later this year)
- May 2025: Airlines start their “summer weight” program
And now, Delta’s boarding changes
Delta announced not long ago that as of tomorrow, May 16th, they are making a change to their boarding process. That’s when Delta 360 members will have to board in Zone 2, with Diamond Medallion members (First Class customers will still be a part of Zone 1).
A year ago, also in May, Delta 360 members were given pre-boarding status, which allowed them to board early, along with those who require extra time, and active duty members of the military. But I guess Delta can giveth and Delta can taketh away. Regardless, it’s being considered an unusual move, because Delta 360 members are considered the airline’s ultra-elite travelers, who have this status by invitation only (similar to American Airlines’ Concierge Key level and United Airlines’ Global Services).
The airline has given no reason for the change, other than a vague, “At Delta we regularly refine our boarding processes to ensure a more seamless and efficient experience for all customers,” according to a statement given to TPG.
I don’t know how taking your most elite group of flyers and dropping them 2 boarding groups down is more seamless and efficient; I mean, how many pre-boarders and active military are there on any given flight, anyway? But they didn’t ask me for my input, so…
SO, if you’re a Delta 360 member, heads up that as of tomorrow, you’re in Zone 2, not a preboarder. Well, unless you have a first-class ticket…and then you’re Zone 1.
