Chase Is Honoring Its Mistaken Ink Cash Email With Temporary Bonus Categories

by joeheg

Back at the end of May, some Ink Business Cash cardholders received an odd email from Chase. It detailed a set of bonus categories that didn’t match the current terms of the Ink Business Cash cards—things like 3% back at gas stations, restaurants, and hardware stores. The problem? That isn’t the actual earnings structure of the card.

There was no correction or retraction at the time, which led to considerable confusion. Some figured Chase had accidentally referenced legacy Ink Cash cards, which have a different earning setup. We covered the whole situation here.

But here’s the twist: Chase is making good on their mistake. But only for a little while.

What Bonus Categories Are Being Honored?

In a new email, Chase confirmed that from May 27 through July 1, 2025, affected Ink Cash cardholders will receive temporary elevated earn rates on up to $25,000 in combined purchases. Here’s what that looks like:

  • 3% at gas stations
  • 3% at restaurants
  • 3% at hardware and home improvement stores
  • 5% at office supply stores
  • 5% at internet, cable, and phone services
  • 1% on all other purchases

You’ll see any additional bonus cash back posted to your account 6–8 weeks after July 1st.

What Happens After July 1?

On July 1, 2025, the card will return to its regular bonus structure:

  • 5% at office supply stores and on internet/cable/phone services (up to $25K per cardmember year)
  • 2% at gas stations and restaurants (also up to $25K per cardmember year)
  • 1% on all other purchases

A Nice Recovery From Chase—Or a Legal Obligation?

To their credit, Chase didn’t just chalk this up as a harmless mistake. Whether due to customer goodwill or banking regulations that prohibit pulling back a promoted offer, they’re honoring the more generous earn rates described in the email. It’s somewhat confusing that they waited over a month to send an acknowledgement about the error, as cardholders were discussing it online, and I’m sure more than one person called Chase to ask what was happening.

Final Thought

If you were one of the Ink Cash cardholders who received the incorrect email, consider this a small victory. You’re getting enhanced cash back on eligible categories through July 1. And if you haven’t taken advantage yet, you still have a few days to earn 3X at gas stations, restaurants, and hardware stores, along with the usual 5X at office supply stores and internet services.

Just be sure to get your spending in before July 1st, because after that, everything goes back to normal.
