17th Airport Now Allows Unticketed People Through TSA Security

by SharonKurheg

Way back when, during the halcyon days before 9/11, it was easy to get to the airside of an airport. We’d just check in, go through a metal detector, and then go to the gate. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Loved ones used to be able to accompany you to the gate for that last goodbye, or they could meet you there when your flight landed.

Of course, you can still technically go all the way to the gate, even without a boarding pass, if you’re accompanying someone who needs special assistance before they get onto a plane. You have to have all of your paperwork in order, but it’s a smart way to make sure that kids or people with mobility problems or other disabilities arrive at the departure gate safely.

Visitor pass programs across the U.S.

However, in the couple of years before COVID, a handful of airports were experimenting with programs that allowed non-passengers to pass the TSA checkpoint, even if they weren’t with someone who needed assistance. Of course, they weren’t doing this out of the goodness of their hearts or so you could be in a good place for plane spotting. It was intended so people could potentially take advantage of the airside shopping and dining opportunities. I guess Xpress Spa is THAT popular? 😉

Fast forward a few years, though, and as the pandemic waned. Happily, several of the airports that previously had these “visitor’s pass” programs started them up again, and others joined in on the fun. In fact, by early 2025, there were 17 airports in the U.S. that offered these types of passes.

Orlando stopped; down to 16

Unfortunately, in March of this year, Orlando International Airport decided to no longer offer their MCO Visitor Pass. To date, the program still hasn’t re-started.

That brought the number of airports that still offered such a pass down to 16:

#17: Kansas City International Airport (MCI)

Happily though, we’re back up to 17 such airports, as Kansas City International Airport (MCI) has just begun their version of a guest pass, called MCI Guest Pass.

MCI’s Guest Pass is available for non-ticketed guests to:

Accompany a Traveler

The MCI Guest Pass Program allows you to accompany your family or friends all the way to their departing gate, inside security, and ensure they board the aircraft. Alternately, the program also allows you to meet your loved one’s incoming flight just as they deplane into the concourse and escort them to the terminal exit.

Dine & Shop

Take advantage of favorite local and national brands offering unique shopping and dining experiences. Enjoy date night with great BBQ and a glass of wine. Spend a relaxing afternoon browsing at several distinct shops. Or just grab a cup of locally roasted coffee and peruse the many bookstores.

Explore

Take in the many public artworks throughout the terminal where you can immerse yourself in another perspective. Prepare a fearful traveler for an upcoming flight at the Kansas City Air Travel Experience. Or simply enjoy watching the aircraft move around the airfield through the many picturesque windows throughout the terminal.

How to get a MCI Guest Pass:

Here’s how MCI says you can get a Guest Pass:

STEP 1
Apply Online
  • Review the Guest Pass Terms of Use and Frequently Asked Questions below before applying.
  • Complete your application online 1-7 days prior to visiting.
  • Guest Passes are free!
STEP 2
Receive Your Digital Guest Pass
  • Once you have submitted your application you will receive an email confirmation, if approved.
  • The digital Guest Pass on your device, along with your government-issued REAL ID or passport, will be required at the security checkpoint.
STEP 3
Go Through Security Screening
  • At your scheduled time, arrive at the security checkpoint inside the terminal, as if you are a regular traveler.
  • Show your digital Guest Pass and photo ID at the checkpoint.
  • Go through the screening process.
  • Enjoy your day on the secure side of the terminal!

The application

The application is simple enough to fill out online, with basic information such as when you want to visit and your email. They do ask you to scan your passport or photo ID (that gives them access to your name and address, which is otherwise not on the application), and indicate the reason for your visit.

While that might be nice for friends and family (while I can’t imagine the attraction unless you are escorting a minor or passenger that needs help) it adds more people into TSA lines extending the wait times.

You’re right, it does. But it’s not massive amounts. Orlando, when they had their program open, was getting an average of 16-17 people per day. And MCO is a lot bigger than MCI.
