During our trip to Puerto Rico earlier this year, I quickly discovered something frustrating: if I wanted to use a rideshare service, Uber was my only option. Lyft? Nowhere to be found. (We wrote about that experience in this post.)
Well, that’s no longer the case—Lyft has officially launched service across Puerto Rico. In an announcement on their blog, Lyft shared that as of now, the app is live island-wide:
“¡Hola, Puerto Rico! Starting today, Lyft is now available across the island.”

Locals and Tourists Were Already Looking for It
Lyft says they saw demand even before launching—people were already opening the app in Puerto Rico, especially travelers from cities like New York and Chicago who expected Lyft to be available. Once the company began signing up drivers, app activity in the region increased by over 30%.
Lyft’s Bigger Global Ambitions
Puerto Rico is just one part of Lyft’s larger expansion plans. After becoming profitable and cash-flow positive in 2024, the company has started looking outside the U.S. It now operates in the 10 largest cities in Canada, and it’s preparing to enter Europe through a nearly $200 million acquisition of Freenow, one of the region’s biggest taxi platforms. That deal is expected to close later this year and would significantly increase Lyft’s reach.
Still Playing Catch-Up to Uber
While Lyft is just beginning to grow its international footprint, Uber has had a global presence for years. From Latin America to Europe, Asia to Africa, Uber is already well-entrenched in many countries. Lyft’s expansion may be ambitious, but it still has a long way to go to match Uber’s worldwide coverage.
Final Thought
We’re glad to see Lyft finally arriving in Puerto Rico—it gives both locals and tourists another option when getting around the island. And with bigger international moves on the horizon, Lyft’s future could look very different a few years from now. We’ll definitely be keeping an eye on how it plays out.
