Central Florida Airport Eyes Expansion with Land Purchase Plan

by joeheg

A growing airport in Central Florida is preparing for a significant expansion that could reshape its future development. Officials are seeking to acquire a 176-acre parcel of land situated on the northwestern edge of the airfield. Before the deal can proceed, however, the city council must approve the transaction.

This proposed land acquisition is part of the airport’s long-term master plan, approved several years ago, which aims to attract new tenants and boost its regional economic impact. The added acreage would provide the airport with the flexibility to support aviation-related businesses, expand its current operations, or attract entirely new industries.

Still a Minor Player in Commercial Aviation

Although the airport officially rebranded as Melbourne Orlando International (MLB) after settling a naming dispute with Orlando International Airport (MCO), it remains a smaller player in the commercial airline market. Current routes include:

  • Allegiant Air: Allentown, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh
  • American Eagle: Charlotte
  • Delta Air Lines: Atlanta
  • TUI Airways: Seasonal service from eight UK airports, including 17 weekly flights moved from Sanford to Melbourne beginning in 2022 to align with TUI’s Marella Cruises, which sail from nearby Port Canaveral

Big Business in Aerospace

Where MLB shines is in its role as a hub for the aerospace and defense sectors. The airport is surrounded by major industry players and research facilities, including:

  • Northrop Grumman
  • GE Railway
  • Rockwell Collins
  • DRS Technologies
  • L3 Harris

In addition, the airport leases property to two local hospitals and a hotel.

A major development currently underway is the new Embraer Business Jet Assembly Facility. When complete, it’s expected to employ 200 workers and support production of the Phenom 100 and 300, along with the Legacy 450 and 500 models.

Looking Ahead

The new parcel targeted for purchase would enhance the airport’s ability to attract new aerospace tenants and support the region’s economic growth. If approved by the city council, the land would provide a much-needed boost to the airport’s development pipeline and potentially accelerate the diversification of its operations.
