Is the Citi Strata Premier Still Worth It Now That the Strata Elite Exists?

a credit card on a white surface

For years, the Citi Strata Premier card has been one of the most valuable ways to unlock Citi’s ThankYou ecosystem. Outside of the long-gone Prestige, it’s the card that enables full 1:1 transfers to Citi’s airline and hotel partners—and that’s the core of its value.

But now that Citi has introduced the premium Strata Elite, does the Premier still deserve a spot in your wallet?

Why People Keep the Premier

The Premier stands out because of partner transfers. Without it, points earned on no-fee cards like the Citi Custom Cash or Double Cash can’t be moved to programs like Avianca LifeMiles, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, or Singapore KrisFlyer.

The value has only increased with the addition of American Airlines AAdvantage as a transfer partner—something Citi fans have wanted for years.

For background on the card itself, see our earlier post: Citi Strata Premier overview.

What the Strata Premier Offers

And most importantly: transfer access to Citi’s full roster of partners at 1:1.

How It Compares to the Strata Elite

The Strata Elite is Citi’s premium option, with lounge access, bigger statement credits, and higher multipliers—along with a much higher annual fee. If you fully use the luxury perks and can offset the cost, it can make sense. But for most travelers, Premier remains the more affordable, practical choice, delivering nearly the same transfer power without the hefty price tag.

The Citi Trifecta: Why Premier Is Essential

The Premier isn’t just good on its own—it’s the anchor of Citi’s “Trifecta.”

Without the Premier or Elite cards, points from Custom Cash and Double Cash are stuck in limited redemption options. With it, everything can transfer to airline and hotel partners—including AAdvantage.

Final Thoughts

Is the Citi Strata Premier still worth keeping? Definitely. For a modest annual fee, you get strong earning categories, a useful hotel credit, solid travel protections, and—most importantly—the ability to unlock Citi’s full transfer ecosystem. The Strata Elite may be tempting for premium-perk seekers, but for most people, Premier remains the sweet spot. And if you’re running the Citi Trifecta, the Premier isn’t optional—it’s essential.
