Many people invest their money in the stock market as a way to earn income. They might do it privately, or they might have their money in an account; retirement accounts are good examples. Those in charge of the accounts, in turn, invest the money into stocks.
However, some people invest in stocks as a way to get benefits, just by being a stockholder. Although it doesn’t happen nearly as much or as often anymore, there was a time when shareholders could potentially get free stuff, substantial discounts, and other kinds of perks.
Again, the perks aren’t as substantial as they used to be, but if you own shares of certain hotel stocks, you can get some nice benefits. Here are some examples of what you can potentially get:
What perks do you get if you have stock in an airline?
Again, the benefits of being a stockholder have decreased over the years. In fact, there are no U.S.-based airlines that give substantial freebies such as discounts, etc. However there are a handful of airlines outside the U.S. where, if you’re a shareholder, you can get some nice discounts.
Air France-KLM
Shareholders who own 5 or more shares of Air France-KLM stock are given the opportunity to attend special events (i.e. virtual site visits and interaction with the Management), as well as special offers and invitations that are only available to members.
At the time of this writing, a single share of Air France-KLM stock currently sells for roughly 11.12 euro ($12.87 USD)
ANA
Shareholders who own 100 or more shares of ANA stock at the end of March or September will receive roughly 50% discount coupons on the ANA FLEX fare of any ANA domestic flight. The number of coupons you receive will be based on how many shares of stock you own.
A big caveat to this is you have to have an address in Japan.
At the time of this writing, a single share of ANA Holdings Inc. stock currently sells for roughly 2,822.00 Japanese yen ($19.09 USD)
JAL
Shareholders who own 100 or more shares of the common stock, ANA will grant 50% discount coupons on regular one-way airfare for any flight on designated domestic routes serviced by Japan Airlines Co., Ltd., Japan Transocean Air Co., Ltd., Japan Air Commuter Co., Ltd. and Ryukyu Air Commuter Co., Ltd. The number of coupons you receive will be based on how many shares of stock you own.
This benefit is available to all shareholders, regardless if they have an address in Japan or not.
At the time of this writing, a single share of Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. stock currently sells for roughly $10.10.
Star Flyer
Another Japanese airline! Stockholders of a certain level may receive complimentary tickets, discount coupons or priority booking availability.
At the time of this writing, a single share of Star Flyer Inc. stock currently sells for roughly 2,201.00 Japanese yen ($14.89 USD)
And…that’s about it.
Until a few months ago, SAS offered some perks that allowed shareholders to potentially receive Gold or even Diamond status. But with Air France-KLM becoming a majority holder in SAS, those days are gone. Womp womp.
