When you have to get a passport – either new or renewed – you have to submit a photo that will be a part of said passport. You are allowed to take your own photo and submit that, but because there are certain rules you have to follow to ensure your photo will be approved, many people just pay to get their photo taken by someone who knows the rules and what needs to be done to ensure they’re followed.
Or are SUPPOSED to, anyway.
Kate Bitters, a resident of Minnesota, was in that sort of situation not long ago, when she needed to get her passport photo taken. She went to Walgreens and plopped down $18 because yep, Walgreens still has a photo department and they will still sell you digital or hard copies of what are supposed to be (operative words: “supposed to be”) be passport-worthy photos.
According to her Threads profile, this is what Walgreens gave her:

She told Newsweek:
At first, I was kind of stunned. I decided to try it anyway and uploaded the photo and I cropped it to size within the system, but it was blurry and was instantly rejected. Then, I started to see the humor in it because the display of birthday items behind me, coupled with my mugshot look, was pretty hilarious.
The replies she got on Threads were, of course, typical to social media and guaranteed to make you smile:

Anyway, there was a happy ending to the story. Bitters said, in a follow-up post:
Thank you everyone for all the silly comments and crops! I needed this kind of levity. Walgreens ended up retaking my picture for free. Same lady! She was actually super nice. As a backup, I asked her to take a photo with my phone. I got home, waited a while, but the digital photo never landed in my inbox (or spam folder)! I ended up submitting the pic from my phone and the system accepted it. 🥲
