When you go to an airport lounge, you typically expect to have a pleasant experience. Ideally, you expect to see a nice choice of seating, food and drink options and clean bathroom facilities. If you’re at a “nicer” lounge, you expect them to “kick it up a notch,” and to see better food, spa/wellness options, shower stalls, etc.
What don’t you expect to see?
Mice.
But that’s exactly what Reddit user “tpurves” saw at the Air Canada lounge at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) a couple of days ago.
They posted a video on Reddit’s r/aircanada subreddit that shows the little vermin scurrying around the floor, crawling underneath seating areas and moving under tables:

But the worst part? Commenters to the post seemed pretty unsurprised – they said they’ve had similar experiences and that sightings of mice at YVR aren’t uncommon.
Awesomesauce.
Before long, the thread was filled with comments from users who claimed the issue extends far beyond that particular lounge, and that they had seen mice elsewhere in the terminal…as well as other places.
- YVR as a whole is absolutely rodent infested– viccityguy2k
- ^^^ Vancouver as a whole is absolutely rodent infested. You don’t wanna know where we find mice at St. Paul’s hospital — friedrice1212
- Worked at yvr there’s also roaches… like a ton. I put my bag in the locker and there was literally 10 crawling over it. — Decent_Release3804
- ^^^ One mouse got 2 hours into an orthopedic surgery before they caught it. — MathisHard_11236
- There are millions of traps on all the hallways that aren’t publicly available. they try. — 4everadumdum
- ^^^ I’ve seen many in the public areas too. — dzuunmod
- There has been at least 3 posts I remember over the last ~2 years thar I’ve seen this happen specifically at the YVR lounge. I wonder if they’ll ever fix this… — KariKyouko
- It’s not just YVR. We were watching a mouse in YHZ yesterday.– AshleyLunchbox
- ^^^ The YUL domestic lounge had a decent resident population too. — Full-Librarian1115
- ^^^ I worked in term 1 YYZ. I seen the infestation. But honestly the bigger the building you have (and older) the hardest it is going to be keeping bugs and rodents out. — ifuaguyugetsauced
And the words of a wise sage:
- The thing is wherever there are humans there are rodents. It doesn’t matter whether it’s YVR or another building. There are always rodents everywhere and when they smell food they’ll find a way to access it and then that is it. Unless you have some sort of rodent control like cats or another deterrent they will continue to be prevalent. — Twayblades
Apparently, the province used to use some sort of poison to kill rodents. but they were banned because it was also killing other, non-vermin animals.
Several people suggested having “airport cats” to catch the mice. Might not be such a bad idea, huh?
