Passengers Are Turning Cruise Ship Balconies Into Bedrooms — And Cruise Lines Say It’s a Problem

by SharonKurheg

A viral TikTok trend shows cruise passengers dragging mattresses onto their balconies — but cruise lines say it’s unsafe and against the rules.
<>When people go on a cruise, they often want the experience to feel as luxurious as possible. Cruise lines offer plenty of upscale amenities, from spas and specialty restaurants to elaborate shows and private balcony cabins.

But for some passengers, that apparently isn’t enough.

A growing social media trend shows travelers dragging the bed from inside their cabin out onto the balcony — turning the outdoor space into an open-air bedroom.

And cruise lines are not amused.

The viral “balcony bedroom” trend

More than a year ago, we wrote about an unusual incident involving Carnival passengers who moved their bed out onto their balcony to sleep under the stars.

As you might imagine, Carnival was not thrilled.

Now the idea has resurfaced — and it’s spreading on TikTok.

One video showing the setup has already racked up more than 2.5 million views, with travelers turning their balconies into what they see as a luxury outdoor sleeping space.

Oh, great. 🙄

Carnival responds to the trend

Carnival Cruise Line is already trying to shut the idea down before it spreads further.

Carnival brand ambassador John Heald recently addressed the trend on Facebook, calling the behavior “absolutely bonkers.”

He reminded guests that moving furniture or bedding onto a balcony is against the cruise line’s rules.

Heald also pointed out that the viral video currently circulating online wasn’t actually filmed on a Carnival ship — but the cruise line still wanted to warn passengers before the trend spreads onboard.

Why cruise lines don’t allow it

Moving a mattress onto a balcony might look fun in a social media video, but cruise lines say it can create several safety issues.

For example:

  • Mattresses can block emergency exit routes inside a cabin
  • Loose bedding creates trip hazards on balconies
  • There’s an increased risk of someone falling or getting injured

There’s also a practical issue.

Bedding left outside overnight can become damp from ocean air, humidity, and salt spray, meaning housekeeping crews may need to deep-clean or even replace it.

Heald joked that anyone caught dragging their mattress outside might spend the rest of their cruise working as a stateroom attendant.

This isn’t the first time passengers have tried it

Cruise lines have seen similar stunts before.

Passengers have attempted to:

  • sleep outside on balconies during freezing Antarctica cruises
  • move entire bed frames onto Royal Caribbean balconies
  • recreate the trend after earlier viral incidents

So the “balcony bedroom” idea seems to pop up online every couple of months.

Break the rule and you could pay

While it might make for a fun TikTok clip, cruise lines say the behavior can come with real consequences.

Carnival warns that moving furniture or bedding onto balconies violates the ship’s guest code of conduct.

Passengers who ignore the rule could face:

  • warnings from crew members
  • removal of the furniture
  • or even a $500 fine

FAQ

Can you sleep on a cruise ship balcony?

Cruise lines generally do not allow passengers to move mattresses or bedding onto balcony decks. Doing so can create safety hazards and may violate the ship’s code of conduct.

Our take

Sleeping under the stars might sound like the ultimate cruise luxury. But if it involves dragging your cabin mattress outside, cruise lines say it’s definitely not worth the trouble.

What might look great on social media could end up costing passengers a warning — or even a hefty fine.
