When staying in a hotel, I try to make my room feel more “homey.” I’ll unpack things immediately, keep my stuff organized instead of just throwing it all over the room, and bring more toiletries than I need.
The last one is because I’m never quite sure if the hotel I’m staying at will have individually sized toiletries or bulk dispensers of soap and shampoo. Because of that, I’m more likely to bring my own items from home, including small soaps from my vast collection.
This brings me to my most recent travel pet peeve.
Housekeeping, I love you, but we need to talk. Please stop playing musical chairs with my toiletries!
I like to keep things organized. It keeps me happy. I’m not over the top about it, but small things, like stacking my change by coin type, give me some sense of order. It’s one of my strange travel quirks.

How I Organize My Toiletries
In the bathroom, I also keep things organized by category:
- Toothbrush, toothpaste, and mouthwash? Together.
- Razor and shaving cream? Side by side.
- Brush and deodorant? Last-minute essentials, ready to go.
- Miscellaneous items? Off to the side, minding their business.
That’s how I left the room yesterday. Here’s what it looked like when I returned:

The Mystery of My Reorganized Items
Was there a secret feng shui principle at play? Did my toothbrush offend the soap?
I can understand putting the nail clippers next to the razor as grooming products, but why put the toothbrush cover in a prominent spot? I had nothing on the shelf, so why move the shaving cream, brush, and deodorant there?
One last thing: when I left the room, all the items were on the right side of the sink. Moving them to the left side doesn’t bother me, but if you’re going to move them, could you at least mirror where they were on the other side?
I’m spending too much time trying to figure out the thought process behind this. Most likely, no thought was given to the placement of the items; they just wanted to present them neatly. If so, who organizes things like that?
