American Airlines’ AAdvantage program was typical for an airline, where you’d earn miles through flying with American or its partners and by other means including spending on a co-brand credit card, shopping portals, dining and hotels. The miles you earned could be redeemed for free flights as well as qualifying you for American status from Silver to Executive Platinum.
The American Airlines AAdvantage program has undergone a transformation in the last few years. Recently, there’s been a separation between the miles you earn for flights and the system to earn status. You now earn both AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points.
With this change, American Airlines wants people to engage more with the program. To achieve this goal, AAdvantage has increased the number of ways you can earn miles and points. It’s reasonable for someone to get American Airlines status without ever flying on an American plane.
American AAdvantage just added another way to earn miles and loyalty points with AAdvantage Events.
When using the AAdvantage Events website, you’ll have access to the same inventory as on Ticketmaster. However, you’ll earn 1 mile and 1 Loyalty Point per dollar.
You can now purchase tickets directly from Ticketmaster on AAdvantage Events™ and earn American Airlines AAdvantage® miles and Loyalty Points on your favorite events and experiences. Enjoy all the best events across concerts, sports, theatre, art, comedy, festivals, family shows and more in the United States and Canada regions. To earn, just search and purchase your event tickets from this website and you’ll earn on every Ticketmaster purchase.
I did a search for Orlando and found events at the soccer stadium, Hard Rock Live, House of Blues and the Amway Center.
In Las Vegas, you’ll have access to any ticket you can buy on Ticketmaster.
I searched for tickets to see Matchbox Twenty in Tampa. Lawn seats were $30.50 plus fees and taxes.
One bummer about the program is that you’ll only earn miles on the base price of the ticket, not including the Ticketmaster fees, which can be significant.
Earn 1 AAdvantage® mile on every $1 (USD) spent on standard and resale tickets (not including taxes & fees).
If you’re buying tickets from Ticketmaster, why not shop through AAdvantage Events and earn 1 point per dollar? You’re not going to get status only with this method but every point counts.

So basically, a Taylor Swift concert ticket now comes with 200,000 AA miles and Executive Platinum status?
I’d imagine there’s a way to manufacture status with this offer by reselling tickets but it would tie up a bunch of cash. The most popular tickets wouldn’t be available on the website (I checked for Adele in Vegas) and it would be a grind. But it’s possible, I guess.
