One of the lesser-known perks of having an American Express Platinum Card is the exclusive benefits you receive when renting a car. Unlike some AMEX travel benefits, these don’t require booking through the AMEX Travel portal, which can cause confusion for cardholders.
After I wrote about how the AMEX Platinum offers a 4-hour grace period on Hertz rental car returns, several readers reached out asking how to unlock these perks. Here’s a breakdown of the benefits with Hertz and how to access them.
Hertz Benefits
American Express Platinum Card Members enjoy President’s Circle status with Hertz, which includes these perks:
- Guaranteed upgrades
- Free additional driver
- Priority service at the rental counter
- 1.5 points earned per $1 spent
- 24/7 dedicated customer service line
- Access to special promotions and offers
To access these benefits, you need to link your Hertz account with your AMEX Platinum card. You can do this online or by calling the number on your card.
Additionally, Platinum Card Members can use the AMEX Corporate Discount Code (CDP) 211762 to maximize savings and perks. Here’s what the CDP unlocks:
- 4-hour grace period for returns within the U.S. (before an extra day’s charge is applied)
- Up to 20% off published base rates
- Guaranteed upgrades on certain vehicle classes with a 24-hour advance reservation
More details can be found on the Hertz website here.
Important Notes
Using the CDP requires paying for the rental with your AMEX Platinum card. The Hertz website specifies this as a condition for receiving the benefits:
“The Platinum Card® Member must use the designated Amex Corporate Discount Code (CDP) at the time of reservation and pay for the Hertz rental with his or her Platinum Card.”
That said, I once used this code but paid with my Chase Sapphire Reserve card linked to my Hertz account—and everything worked seamlessly. While I’m not suggesting you’ll have the same experience, it’s worth noting.
Final Thoughts
Navigating credit card perks can feel like jumping through hoops, but unlocking AMEX Platinum’s Hertz benefits is surprisingly straightforward. All it takes is linking your accounts and using a specific discount code when making your reservation. With perks like guaranteed upgrades and a 4-hour grace period, it’s a no-brainer for Platinum Card Members renting through Hertz.
If you’ve had good or bad experiences using the AMEX Platinum Hertz perks, I’d love to hear about them in the comments!
