Even With PreCheck, You May Need to Take These Specific Shoes Off

by SharonKurheg

Besides the convenience of not having to remove your electronics or bag o’ liquids from your carry-on, one of the joys of having TSA PreCheck is not having to take your shoes off. No worries about laces, walking in your socks where who knows what has happened, you name it.

TSA includes that in a lot of their online campaigns touting PreCheck, like this:

a person using a laptop

and this…

a blue and white sign with green check marks

and this…

a blue and white shoe with a blue and white text

That last one, with the high-heeled shoe, is admittedly several years old. But it brings up an interesting point:

Just because you CAN wear certain shoes through the scanner
doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to do so.

I’m not even talking about the comfort of wearing heels in an airport. I mean, *I* could certainly never do it; I’m 100% a sneakers and Crocs kind of woman (and yes, I know how ugly Crocs are. Ask me if I care).

Nah, I’m talking about the fact that a lot of shoes with heels have metal in the heel to keep them sturdy. Doesn’t matter if they’re everyday pumps or fancy stilettos, to increase support and stability, most high heels have a small metal rod in them. And if the scanner detects that metal as you walk through it, that means you’re going to have to remove your high heels, put them through the scanner that your carry-on and/or personal bag went through, and you’ll have to go through the metal detector again, without your shoes on.

And if you’re wearing steel-toed shoes? Or shoes with metal inserts for added security/stability? Same thing applies.

So yes – you CAN wear those kinds of shoes through TSA PreCheck scanners. But it doesn’t mean you necessarily should.

Personally, I suggest Classic Crocs.

I’m gonna disagree on the words classic and crocs belonging in the same sentence.
