When you step into a new hotel, there’s always a bit of mystery. Exactly what type of room will you get? Is the “upgrade” promised by the front desk really a better room, or is it just one a little further from the elevator? Maybe the hotel exceeds your expectations, maybe it failed to reach them, or perhaps it’s exactly what you imagined—for better or worse.
You might also stumble upon something unexpected. It could be a piece of ancient tech, like a super old alarm clock or a TV with outdated connections. But occasionally, you’ll find something that seems completely out of place. That’s exactly what happened during our recent hotel stay.
Our Unexpected Amenity
Since my wife and I usually get a room with one bed, and we habitually sleep on the same side of the bed that we sleep on at home, I often end up with the nightstand that holds the phone or the alarm clock.
But this time, there was something different on the nightstand that immediately caught my eye. It looked like a mini-Marshall amplifier.
The Marshall Acton II Speaker
What I found was a Marshall Acton II Bluetooth speaker. While an unusual amenity for a hotel room, it was undoubtedly an upscale one. The second version of this speaker still holds up well, and the third-generation model sells for $279.
I had to hear what a $300 Bluetooth speaker sounded like, so I linked it to my phone and started streaming SiriusXM. Let me tell you, this speaker sounded fantastic—far better than what I’d expect to find in a hotel room. Surprisingly, there were no instructions on how to connect a device, which made me wonder how many guests actually use it.

What did your neighbors think about your speakers?
We were considerate and didn’t blast them out of their room.
