It was only a matter of time: JetBlue has raised its checked bag fees.
JetBlue has become the first U.S. airline to raise checked bag fees. They say it’s to offset the cost of jet fuel prices, which have increased due to the military skirmish in Iran.
Passengers are now required to pay at least $39 to check a bag, up $4 from the previous $35 fee. Checking a second bag will now cost at least $59, which is a $9 increase from their previous $50 price. Those rates apply to bags checked more than 24 hours before departure.
If passengers check their bags within 24 hours of departure, the prices are even higher. According to the airline’s website, they’ll pay an additional $10 per bag on top of those rates.
Here are the new prices for checked bags:

“As we experience rising operating costs, we regularly evaluate how to manage those costs while keeping base fares competitive and continuing to invest in the experience our customers value,” JetBlue said in a statement to CBS News on Monday. “Adjusting fees for optional services used by select customers, such as checked baggage, allows us to continue offering more competitive fares.”
The airline added that it only increases fees “when necessary.”
Other airlines have been increasing their prices but so far have held off on raising bag fees—but it’ll be interesting to see if that changes.
