Orlando International Airport put out a press release on May 5th to make the public aware of the measures it was taking to prepare for the resumption of normal commercial activity.
“The safety of the traveling public is of the utmost importance to us and our partners,” said Phil Brown, Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. “For the last several months, we have taken action for safe and clean facilities to best protect the traveling public and employees from the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, we focus on rebuilding confidence for passengers that we’re doing what we can to maintain a safe environment.”
The first focus of the press release was the measures the airport was implementing in terms of passenger safety:
Passenger Safety
- The airport will have new signs outside the main terminal to remind and encourage passengers about the importance of social distancing. They will distance orange cones 6 feet apart, the distance as recommended by the CDC’s recommendation, and will be visual markers to separate parties.
- Social distancing markers will be placed as needed at security checkpoints and near ticket counters.

- They are installing acrylic protective screens at ticket counters, as well as at retail and food outlets.
- Hand sanitizer stations remain located throughout the terminal and at the airsides.
- An enhanced cleaning schedule has already started earlier this year. It includes more frequent cleaning of high touch point areas such as elevator buttons, chairs, handrails and other high traffic areas. This cleaning will continue as MCO gets ready for the return of more passengers at the airport.
- There will also be an increase in cleaning crews in or around the area of the trams.
- Virtually all U.S.-based airlines are requiring (or will soon require) all passengers to wear face masks when on the plane. Travelers will be strongly encouraged to also wear a face mask or covering while at the airport.
The press release also discusses the measures that have been taken in the name of employee safety and air service and what their next steps are, in terms of communication with governing bodies.
