Spain has had the 5th highest number of both COVID-19 cases and COVID-related deaths in the world. The country’s citizens were on lockdown for weeks, and were only allowed outside to walk their dogs, shop for groceries or go to work at essential businesses and services. With numbers slowly improving, the country has eased the lockdown, as well as allowed foreigners back into the country since mid-May, albeit with a requirement of a 2-week quarantine upon entering.
Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya had previously hinted the quarantine policy would be relaxed in July, without specifying the date. The date has finally been announced.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has now announced that effective July 1, foreign tourists will be allowed back into the country without having to isolate themselves for 2 weeks.
Said Sanches to The Guardian: “As you know, Spain receives more than 80 million visitors a year. I am announcing that from July, Spain will reopen for foreign tourism in conditions of safety. Spain needs tourism, and tourism needs safety in both origin and destination. We will guarantee that tourists will not run any risks, nor will they bring any risk to our country.”
“The worst is behind is. In JULY we will gradually open to international tourists, lift the quarantine, ensure the highest standards of health safety. We look forward 2 welcoming you!” Foreign Minister Gonzalez said in a tweet.
Specifics were not yet offered if Spain would be open to all international tourists or only those from specific countries. Rules for testing upon entering the country, requirements for social distancing and/or the use of face coverings, etc. were also not mentioned during the announcement but are sure to be clarified in the upcoming days.
